Street Fighter VS Tekken

From Wikipedia.org:

For Evo 2011, a tournament season was announced in which players could earn ranking points at one of eight tournaments. It took place at the Rio Las Vegas from July 29 to July 31, utilizing a 55,000 square foot ballroom. All 50 states of the U.S. were represented, as well as 44 additional countries.  On July 25, 2011, it was announced that PlayStation Home users could watch a live stream of the tournament.  In attendance was Street Fighter series producer Ono Yoshinori, who announced a free balance patch for Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition.  Tekken series producer Katsuhiro Harada was also on hand to show new mechanics for Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and Soul Calibur V.  Other unreleased games shown were King of Fighters XIII and Skullgirls. A Skullgirls side tournament was held in which the winner received a one-of-a-kind Skullgirls-themed arcade stick.  Media outlets G4, GameSpot and Destructoid were all present to cover the event.  Evo 2011 was notable in that Daigo Umehara failed to win a third Street Fighter IV title. Umehara was first knocked into the loser's bracket by Poongko, then eliminated by Latif.

This is the biggest turnout I have seen yet--standing in a room of the elite fighting game players made me proud to be a fan.

Growing up with Street fighter, it makes an old man proud to see a whole new generation of gamers commit themselves to mastering the combos of legend.  Why did I start going to EVO?  Because of a single youtube video.

There is nothing I love more than watching skilled players play my favorite video games.  And nothing made me feel as much as a little kid, when I saw 8 year old Noah Hill beating the crap out of adults 4 times his age in Marvel VS Capcom 3.  Soak that in for a second... 8 years old.

Capcom was handing out posters, fans were selling exclusive artwork, and there were some creative t-shirts this year for hard core fans:

There's really nothing quite like EVO, and I highly recommend checking it out.  It's more of a community than a convention.  Some vendors are there, but at the core, it's just a group of fans from around the world who refuse to let the fighting games die.  Who knows?  Maybe I'll see you there next year.
