XBOX Live for Original XBOX Users Coming to an End!

Posted by TonyB at 01:42 AM on February 07, 2010

Microsoft is discontinuing all support on XBOX live for the original system, on 04-15-10.

From IGN.com:

"This isn't a decision we made lightly, but after careful consideration, it is clear this will provide the greatest benefit to the Xbox LIVE community," said Microsoft's Marc Whitten. First launched in 2002, Xbox LIVE has since become the cornerstone of Microsoft's console strategy, enjoying huge popularity on the Xbox 360 with some 23 million users.”

"Whether you like this game or not, it deserves its place in gaming history."

Bungie is planning one last dance, for the most popular game left online for the original XBOX—Halo2.

"We're all saddened at the realization that an era is coming to an end but looking back, we're incredibly fortunate to have had such a great run and such strong support from our fans," Bungie said. "Halo 2 has been at or near the top of the Xbox LIVE charts for original games since it launched over five years ago.

"We're extremely thankful to everyone who has played, enjoyed and supported Halo 2 over Xbox LIVE. We've had some great fun together, including far too many humpday losses to even recount. That said, mark your calendars now - on April 14th let's all rally to go online for one last hoorah.  One final farewell and one final opportunity for all of you to kick our asses at Halo 2."

Well my friends, this is definitely an end to an era for Microsoft.  Looks like Bungie is going to give the XBOX the good sendoff that it deserves, and it can now officially take its rightful place among retro consoles.  Make no mistake, the system has its share of lovers and haters, but I think overall it has an impressive library of games and an online community that sent Sony scrambling to catch up.  In honor of this event, I think I’ll bust out some Stubbs the Zombie.  What will you do?
